Here is a simple henna-for-hair recipe I've used for friends:

For shoulder-length or shorter hair, use 1 100g box of Jamila henna powder.
For most long hair, 2 boxes is adequate.
If your hair is super long, you may need more.

Make strong black tea and throw a couple cloves in there for a beautiful scent. (But not too many - clove can be a skin irritant.)
Mix 2 parts tea with 1 part cider vinegar.

Add liquid to henna until it is the consistency of pudding (slightly thick pudding).
Let it sit on the counter overnight in the summer (house at 78 degrees), or 2 nights in the winter (house at 67 degrees).

Apply to hair. Wrap with saran wrap. Keep it on as long as possible for darker, richer color. Wash out - yes, it'll take some doing - it's basically fancy mud. Your hair will be bright at first and then the tone will mellow out a bit over the next few days.
